PubMed and Grant Numbers

Have you ever wondered why grant numbers appear (and sometimes don’t appear) in PubMed citations?

MEDLINE/PubMed pulls grant numbers into citations from several different sources:

1.When you add grant data to NCBI’s My Bibliography or the NIH Manuscript System (NIHMS) for submission from PubMed Central (PMC)

2.In the citation data that journal publishers submit to PubMed

3.By indexers at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) who have verified the grant information as published

So, if you notice a PubMed citation lacking a grant number, you should make sure that you have added the grant to the citation in My Bibliography. If you are using NIHMS to submit your manuscript to PMC, make sure the grant is listed there. Keep in mind that it may take a few days before changes in My NCBI appear in PubMed.
Detailed information about grant numbers in PubMed is available from NLM.
